Self Employed Income Scheme – Opening a Government Gateway Account

Following the announcement that an eligibility checker for the SEIS scheme was open on 4th May 2020 we have been checking eligibility for our clients and advising them on how to claim if eligible. One of the main issues we identified was that a Government Gateway account needs to be set up by the taxpayer to make the claim themselves (unfortunately accountants cant do this even if authorised with HMRC)

Normally to set up a Gateway account you would need to register online and wait for a code to arrive in the post – HMRC have now confirmed that this process will be changed for the SEIS scheme BUT ONLY if you apply to open the account via the online claims portal or eligibility checker.

Instead of waiting for a code you will need to prove your identity in a different way such as

Passport Details – Driving Licence Details – Answering questions about other financial contracts you have (i.e. mobile phone etc)
